District Governor Pete Booker has been a Rotarian for 28 years, beginning his Rotary journey as a member of the Fredericksburg-Rappahannock Rotary Club in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Upon the family’s return to Delaware, Pete was invited into the Rotary Club of Wilmington. He has been a member there for 24 years. Pete was the President of the Wilmington club in 2006-2007 and an Assistant Governor in Area 10 of the District from 2008-2011.

Pete was born in Wilmington, Delaware. He attended Tatnall School through 10th grade and graduated from Thomas Mc Kean High School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from the University of Delaware.

His 46-year broadcasting includes several on-air programming and management positions in Wilmington, Philadelphia, Detroit and Virginia. Pete served as President/CEO of Delmarva Broadcasting Company from 1993 until his retirement in 2015. In that role, he was responsible for guiding 14 radio stations in three states and building a digital media and marketing division from scratch.

Pete is now filling the role of Executive Director of the SmartDrive Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization he founded in 2004 that is dedicated to improving the driving skills and risk avoidance of teen drivers. SmartDrive is an online, in-school and in-vehicle program that teaches responsibility, accountability and maturity. It creates incentive by offering post-secondary scholarships and other awards to top performing students. Delaware students can also earn insurance discounts. Over 160,000 students in more than 120 schools in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and South Carolina have been involved with at least one of SmartDrive’s driver safety activities.

Susan and Pete were married in 1976. Susan has worked as a social worker, campus minister, and grant writer and as a volunteer for several non-profit organizations.   She now serves on the Boards of the SmartDrive Foundation, Jesus House Prayer and Renewal Center and Mass for the Homeless, Inc. Over the years, Susan has participated in many Rotary projects and is a contributing partner in the “Office of District Governor”. The Bookers have two children: Dr. Hilary Booker who owns and operates “The Institute for Earth-Based Living”, a holistic lifestyle advocacy, research, education and coaching business, and Julian, who owns “Galactic Cat Audio”, a live and studio sound production business. Julian is also a radio personality and programmer at WXPN-FM in Philadelphia.

Pete and Susan have a long history of community involvement and activism in addition to Rotary. Pete’s recent and current affiliations include memberships on the Board of Corporators at Artisan’s Bank, the Board of Directors of Commonwealth Trust Company, the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Delaware, The ServiceSource Network, The National Association of Broadcasters and Ursuline Academy, where he served as Board Chair for 6 years

The couple was honored in 2017 with the Monsignor Thomas Reese Award for Community Service by the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington. Additionally, Pete has been recognized with the Delaware State Chamber’s Marvin S. Gilman Bowl honoring an individual who has made outstanding contributions to small business and non-profit organizations of Delaware; the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce “Wallace C. Johnson Award” for Outstanding Community Service; the National Association of Broadcasters “Service To America” award and the March of Dimes “Jane Maroney Award” for Child Advocacy. Pete is also a proud member of both the Thomas McKean High School Hall of Fame and the University of Delaware Radio Hall of Fame.

The Bookers enjoy being together with their children, recreational activities, music, traveling and relaxing at the beach. Pete also plays music in an oldies band: Kathie Martin & The Hot Rods and tries to squeeze in an occasional round of golf.
